Mature New Adult/Adult Contemporary Romance - recommended for ages 18 and up.

A fallen boxer.
A woman with a broken dream.
A competition…

He
even makes me forget my name. One night was all it took, and I forgot
everything and anything except the sexy fighter in the ring who sets my
mind ablaze and my body on fire with wanting…

Remington Tate is the strongest, most confusing man I’ve ever met in my life.

He’s
the star of the dangerous underground fighting circuit, and I’m drawn
to him as I’ve never been drawn to anything in my life. I forget who I
am, what I want, with just one look from him. When he’s near, I need to
remind myself that I am strong–but he is stronger. And now it’s my job
to keep his body working like a perfect machine, his taut muscles primed
and ready to break the bones of his next opponents . . .

But the one he’s most threatening to, now, is me.

I want him. I want him without fear. Without reservations.

If only I knew for sure what it is that he wants from me?

Hello Remy!
Wow…
I think I am in love! REAL was, raw, emotional, raunchy, sinfully exciting read with erotic elements. And although this New Adult might not be for everyone (Mature audience) I absolutely swoon over it. I loved Remy from the moment he was introduced in the book and his entrance has made and left an impression on me. His whole character was just powerful and really knew how to bring out all kind of giddy emotions out of me. Most of the book left me breathless or holding my own breath, with heart pounding moments as well as heart clenching moments. My heart literally broke for Remy into a million little pieces hearing his story and the way his parents have treated him. Remy is a fallen boxer, who now does underground fighting. Brooke has torn her knee and can no longer compete for the Olympics and instead she helps treat athletes with injuries. The last thing Brooke expected when Remington Tate calls her up to his hotel room was to be offered a job, but it still might be more then Brooke was willing to bargain for.
And Brooke…wow…
Yeah, love the explosion and the sizzling fireworks between the two and the only explode under the sheets. I think even I was frustrated at a point as Brooke when all he did was leave her unsatisfied with all the kisses. The two have instant chemistry, the moment their worlds and eyes collide. Not insta-love, just lust….lots and lots of lust.
I loved the way he expressed his feelings for her was through songs. The strong dynamics of their relationship and the fact that he wanted to be real with her, wanted her to know the real him before she jumped into bed with him and did something that she couldn’t take back. So misunderstood, so much pain…just a roller-coaster of events.
Couldn’t put the book down, had me biting my nails throughout the pages and has seriously left me speechless.

Katy
Evans grew up with book-boyfriends until she found a real sexy boyfriend to
love, married him, and now they are hard at work on their own happily ever
after. Katy loves her family and friends, and she also loves reading, walking,
baking, and being consumed by her characters until she reaches “The
End.” Which, is hopefully, only the beginning…

To find more about her, look her up on her website, Twitter, or Facebook, she’d
also love to hear from you!

Paperback, 292 pages

Synopsis:

Crime reporter Nichelle Clarke’s days can flip from macabre to comical with a beep of her police scanner. Then an ordinary accident story turns extraordinary when evidence goes missing, a prosecutor vanishes, and a sexy Mafia boss shows up with the headline tip of a lifetime. As Nichelle gets closer to the truth, her story gets more dangerous. Armed with a notebook, a hunch, and her favorite stilettos, Nichelle races to splash these shady dealings across the front page before this deadline becomes her last.

I have to say, I been enjoying the new line release of mysteries from Henery Press and Front Page Fatality did not disappoint!
LynDee Walker throws us yet into another wonderful adventure in her first book of the series! Nichelle Clark is a crime reporter for a paper who has an interesting relationship with her boss Bob as well as the police she uses for source in her stories. When a boat accident occurs between several baseball players and Richmond DP officers, the story ends up being bigger then Nichelle can handle. Now with a case of stolen evidence, missing people and hot Mafia boss showing up in her apartment, Nichelle is thrown into a case that can endanger her life.
Wonderful mystery. Really liked the storyline. It was fast paced after it picked up, with a bit of actions, sass and humor. Nichelle is a very interesting head strong character that goes after her leads and trails that she keeps uncovering throughout the book, ending up with more trouble then she could bargain for. I loved that she had this obsession with buying designer shoes on ebay, as a shoe lover who cannot afford them otherwise. Through the story she was witty, funny, and I loved getting inside of her head. I am going to enjoy more of this series, looking forward to more of Nichelle and her possible prospects for her love life!

Summary from Goodreads

The girl next door never looked so good…

For
Cameron McKenzie, Chloe Dawson has always just been his younger sister
Jane’s best friend—a pesky annoyance who followed him around and acted
like he hung the moon. It isn’t until Jane’s wedding to her firefighter
beau Chris that Chloe reappears in his life…and she isn’t pesky or
annoying anymore. In fact, the beautiful Chloe tempts him beyond reason.
But Cam knows he’s damaged goods—not nearly good enough for Lone Pine
Lake’s resident good girl.

Chloe’s always dreamed of a future
with the dark, brooding Cam, and after they share an explosive kiss, she
wonders if her dream could be coming true. Cam’s never stuck around his
hometown for long, though, so she makes him an offer: one sweet summer
romance with no strings attached. This good girl’s ready for an
adventure…one that just might end up lasting a lifetime.

Chloe Dawson has always had a thing for Cameron McKenzie since she
was younger. To Cameron, she was just his younger sisters annoying
friend who followed him around every turn with those big puppy dog
eyes making her crush apparent. When Cameron finally returns home,
after taking a leave from his work due to his injury, he cannot help
but let his eyes wander over Chloe Dawson, no longer the kid he
remembers.
Cameron has always ran away from his
troubles and the town he is from. With no intentions on staying
longer then necessary, the last thing he wants is a relationship.
Chloe is the town princess, admired and loved by everyone, and the
last thing Cameron wants to do is hurt her…
Which he does, after she proposes to
have a summer adventure with Cam, he turns her down. In turn, Cam
manages to say a few bad things to Chloe in hopes of driving her
away. So when Chloe gets into a car accident that very night, after
his choice of words, Cam cannot help but feel guilty.
Cute book, and although I found myself
furious with Cam for being such a jerk to Chloe he has managed to
redeem himself….only to screw it up again. When Cam finds out that
Chloe doesn’t remember anything from that night, he allows himself to
indulge in her fantasy. She wants summer romance (no sex) adventure
until he leaves. When Cameron agrees, he didn’t see himself losing
his heart to the wonderful woman until it is a little too late.
Thought I couldn’t help but feel bad
for Chloe, I appreciated Cam’s efforts into staying true to his
bargain and give Chloe the summer romance adventure she asked of him.
It was a sweet read, with silly undertones, that kept me flipping
through the pages. I liked the family dynamics of Cam’s siblings, and
the fact that he was a far cry from perfect – always assuming that
he was a black sheep of the family. The ending was endearing, and I
was glad for how their story turned out. A great summer read that I truly enjoyed

Series: Stand-Alone

Genre: Young Adult Mystery/Paranormal
Heat Level: Kissing

Summary from Goodreads

They say first love never dies…

From
critically acclaimed author Kate Ellison comes a heartbreaking mystery
of mental illness, unspoken love, and murder. When sixteen-year-old
artist Olivia Tithe is visited by the ghost of her first love, Lucas
Stern, it’s only through scattered images and notes left behind that she
can unravel the mystery of his death.

There’s a catch: Olivia
has gone colorblind, and there’s a good chance she’s losing her mind
completely—just like her mother did. How else to explain seeing (and
falling in love all over again with) someone who isn’t really there?

With
the murder trial looming just nine days away, Olivia must follow her
heart to the truth, no matter how painful. It’s the only way she can
save herself.

Wow what a deep and emotional read. I
jumped on the Notes From Ghost Time bandwagon a bit late but I
enjoyed it wholeheartedly.
It was emotional and intense, with a
gripping storyline that pulls you in from page one. After sharing a
kiss with her best-friend, Olivia takes off to art school to pursue
her dreams – too scared to explore these new feelings. What Olivia
didn’t expect was that it would be the last time she would see Lucas,
as he is found murdered while she is away and her mother been
arrested and charged for his death.
With Olivia’s world spinning out of
control, she ends up getting kicked out of school and forced back to
a new home with her dad and his new soon to be wife. Olivia feels out
of place in her new home among all the rich people that her father
had surrounded himself with. So when the ghost of her love comes to
visit her and saves her from being engulfed by the ocean, Olivia
thinks she is losing her mind. After the kiss and Lucas’ death,
Olivia’s world stripped of color and she became color-blind –
living in gray. Her emotions are out of control and through the book
she goes through figuring out what is real and isn’t real. She must
face the ghost of Lucas and find the reason for him being stuck
there. With her mother’s trial being only nine days away, Olivia must
find Lucas’ real killer and set her mother free.
A touching raw story that deals with
mental illness. Thought you slowly start to figure out the mystery by
half-way through the book, it doesn’t stop the book from being
engaging. I loved the way it was written and I loved Olivia. You
cannot help but feel bad for her as well as admire her spirit in
trying to live in a gray world, battling things people do not
understand. When she tries to confide in people, they look at her in
a different light. Once I had time to get to this book, I couldn’t
pull myself away from it. Immersed in the mystery, the characters and
it’s storyline. A wonderful book!

Review: The Best Man (Blue Heron #1) by Kristan Higgins

The Best Man (Blue Heron #1) by Kristan Higgins

Paperback, 432 pages
Series: Blue Heron

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Heat Level: Sweet

Summary from Goodreads

Sometimes the best man is the one you least expect…Faith
Holland left her hometown after being jilted at the altar. Now a little
older and wiser, she’s ready to return to the Blue Heron Winery, her
family’s vineyard, to confront the ghosts of her past, and maybe enjoy a
glass of red. After all, there’s some great scenery there….

Like
Levi Cooper, the local police chief—and best friend of her former
fiancé. There’s a lot about Levi that Faith never noticed, and it’s not
just those deep green eyes. The only catch is she’s having a hard time
forgetting that he helped ruin her wedding all those years ago. If she
can find a minute amidst all her family drama to stop and smell the
rosé, she just might find a reason to stay at Blue Heron, and finish
that walk down the aisle.

I
have to admit, this was my first Kristan Higgins. I was looking for
some sweet relaxing, small town romance when I came across this book and
was so glad for the opportunity to review it.

The Best Man was a
sweet read. Thought the book did start slow for me that it took me
several tries to get through it (doesn’t count that life got in the way)
I did later on start to enjoy it.

Faith Holland left her
hometown after her high-school sweetheart informed her that he was gay,
no thanks to his best-friend Levi who choose their wedding to push
Jeremy Lyons into finally coming out. All Faith knows is that Levi had
ruined her wedding (despite the fact that her ex-fiance is actually gay)
and leaves for San Francisco. Now much older and wiser, Faith return to
her small town and her family winery.

First half of the book was
mostly the small hate between Levi and Faith, as the book reflects back
in minor flashbacks to what had happened between Faith, Jeremy and Levi
growing up. I really enjoyed their interactions and their snappy
comebacks thrown at each other each time Faith and Levi get tossed into
awkward situations.

The book is filled with colorful characters,
ranging from Faiths dog to her family. I loved the family dynamics of
this book, the way the siblings behaved and interacted with each other. I
believe her grandparents were one of my favorites. Two people who got
married because their families bought them together and were a complete
hoot throughout the book. Where there was hate there was also love…

Faiths
sisters were amusing, especially the one whose husband was addicted to
trying different sexual escapade. Faith’s father is a widower, who lost
his wife in an accident that Faith was also in as a child, and she
somehow after all the years believed it was her fault. He is also pretty
oblivious to other women, especially a gold-digger that pawed her way
into his life and Faith took it into her own hands to try and find her
father a woman with marriage material that wasn’t going to rub him
blind.

It was funny, heart-warming, sad and exciting. Once I was
pass the slow start I thoroughly did enjoy the book and it’s memorable
characters. No one was perfect, which I guess what made the book that
much more better, especially Levi and his story. Even in the end when
everything managed to go down the drain, he found ways to stick the
pieces back together, even if it was slightly out of character for him.
The interaction between Levi and Faith in the second part of the book
was comical, and amusing. A fun light-hearten read for one of those
days.

Summary from Goodreads

Out of work fashion
expert Samantha Kidd is strapped, until the buyer of handbags for a hot
new retailer turns up murdered. When Samantha is recruited for the job,
it comes with a caveat: she’s expected to find some answers. The police
name a suspect but Samantha’s convinced the label doesn’t fit. With
patent determination and a tote bag of tenacity, she turns to a sexy
stranger for help. As the walls close around her like a snug satin
lining, Samantha must get a handle on the suspects, or risk being caught
in the killer’s clutches.

Oh gosh I always love discovering new Cozy Mysteries series to me.

Buyer,
Beware is the second book in Style and Error mystery featuring Samantha
Kidd, an out of work fashion expert who is strapped for money. In order
to remedy her situation, she enters a contest sponsored by one of the
new big companies that moved into her area called Heist. The objective
was to steal a statue from a college and bring it to the opening day
party at Heist in chance of winning thousands of dollars. Enlisting in
the help of some friends and a hot dangerous piece of man by the name of
Dante, Samantha and her group manage to steal the statue. Too bad that
the handbag buyer of Heist is bludgeoned to death by the replica that
Samantha’s friend made in order to swap the statues.

Now Samantha
finds herself recruited for the very same job by Tony Simms, the owner
of Heist who wants answers to his staffs murder. This time Samantha ends
up in cahoots with the police detective instead of snooping around him.
Even if he is still being unreasonable.

There were funny
moments, amusing moments and cute moments. Of course I didn’t have to
read book one to follow along this one just fine. Samantha has helped
find a murder in the first book, so they recruit her and her skills in
order to snoop around and find the murderer in this one. The only thing
that probably made it feel different to me is that I loved Dante and
wasn’t overall fond of Nick – her overseas boyfriend. Dante is sexy and
owns a bike and through the book shows care for Samantha. He kind of
wedged himself into her life, making a shamble out of her feelings. I
loved that he cared for her and was helping her despite her not wanting
him to at the beginning of the book. Meanwhile, she had a hard time
confiding in Nick because there grew a point were he was tired of
listening to her talk about the case. I hope Dante comes back in the
next book, because I would I thought their interactions were cute
(romantic in me I guess) and they fit together well. Who doesn’t love a
good love triangle in books?

The plot was interesting and kept me
guessing through the book. When it was finally revealed who the
murderer was, I have to admit I did not see it coming. Not when all the
suspects had quiet a bit of motive, but in the end it kind of made
sense.

And in all, I liked Samantha. She wasn’t perfect. There
was times she was actually scared, which made her seem very human even
if she was a strong character. She also has her flaws when it comes to
men, especially of her confused feelings towards Nick and new feelings
towards Dante.

I enjoyed this mystery a lot and am looking forward to more from this author!!

Review: When She Was Wicked (Honeycote #1) by Anne Barton

When She Was Wicked (Honeycote #1) by Anne Barton

Published
January 29th 2013
by Forever

Mass Market Paperback, 379 pages
Series: Honeycote

Genre: Adult Historical Romance
Heat Level: Steamy

Amazon | The Book Depository | Goodreads

Summary from Goodreads

Some rules simply beg to be broken…

A dressmaker in London’s busiest shop, Miss Anabelle Honeycote overhears the ton’s
steamiest secrets—and (occasionally) uses them to her advantage. It
isn’t something she’s proud of, but the reluctant blackmailer needs the
money to care for her gravely ill mother. To make up for her misdeeds,
Anabelle keeps to a firm set of rules:

• Never request payment from someone who cannot afford it.
• Never reveal the secrets of a paying client.
• Never enter into any form of social interaction with a client.

Her
list keeps her (somewhat) honest—until she encounters Owen Sherbourne,
the Duke of Huntford. Not only does Owen nip Anabelle’s extortion plans
in the bud, the devilishly handsome Duke soon has the sexy seamstress
dreaming of more than silks and satins. With Owen, Anabelle enjoys
pleasures she never imagined . . . until a scandal from the past
resurfaces. Now her rules could mean his family’s ruin. Owen’s searing
kisses carry the promise of passion, but how will he react when
Anabelle’s most devastating secret is finally revealed?

I truly love well done historical
novels and When She Was Wicked, was the perfect fix for my recent
historical need.
Anabelle Honeycote works as a
seamstress at one of the London’s busiest shop, she is also the
reason for it’s success. Known for her beautiful craft of work and
dresses made for the ladies of the ton that fit their beauty and
personality perfectly. Unfortunately, Anabelle does not make enough
to survive, and with a very sick mother at home – Miss Anabelle
Honeycote turns to extortion in order to make the extra money to pay
for her mothers medicine and keep the roof over their head. The
London’s shop just happens to be the perfect place for all the steamy
gossip.

Anabelle has a certain set of rules she follows in order to make up
for her misdeeds, which protect her and keep her honest. When she
tries to extort some money from the Duke of Huntford, not only does
he catch her, but proposes her a job at his home under surveillance
over the cold and dreary jail cell. Anabelle is to make a certain
amount of dresses for his two sisters within three months, but the
company of the Duke so close is more then Anabelle was willing to
bargain for.
What a beautiful start of a series. I
love the characters, loved the interactions, the storyline and Anne
Barton’s wonderful and clever writing.
Barton knows how to lure you into the
story and make you fall under it’s spell. I couldn’t put the book
down, even when I should have been sleeping. I was so engrossed in
the storyline and the attraction between Owen and Belle, that I
couldn’t put the book down. I knew I had to finish it and learn about
Anabelle’s happily ever after.
Owen is the Duke of Huntford who is a
guardian older brother to two of his sisters. One of which Belle has
threatened to expose her secrets of befriending a servant. A
relationship between his kind and the servants is unheard of, much
less a friendship. But when Miss Honeycote is revealed to be more
beautiful and far more then he can handle, some rules are meant to go
out the window. I loved his character. Loved that he wasn’t really
perfect. Thought he loves his sisters, he has no idea how to
communicate with them. It is even harder with his youngest sister
Rose, who stopped talking sometimes years back and he isn’t all sure
what had caused it. Their father committed suicide and their mother
fled after an affair. He is also unsure of what to make of his
relationship and attraction to Belle, and makes a lot of mistakes
along the way, but their late night meetings and stolen forms of
endearment squeezed my heart through the book.
The attraction was there, and it was
both sweet and steamy. I couldn’t help but feel bad for Anabelle,
especially the secret she was harboring and her relationship with
Owen – since he didn’t want others to know about their attraction.
But his caring gestures had touched my heart.
There were some sad parts, especially involving Miss. Sterling. I hated Miss
Sterling, a woman who everyone assumed wound end up as the Dukes wife
and her hostility to Belle. But the ending ended up being sweet and wonderful and made me squeeze the book from sheer happiness. The Duke really shined and made me fall in love with him myself. I loved Olivia and Rose, and hope that
eventually Barton will write books about them, because I would love
to see their stories and how they panned out as well. Looking forward
to more from this series and this wonderful author!

Stuck
On You
By:
Heather Thurmeier

Blurb
If
being forced to team up with reality TV’s favorite bad girl wasn’t
enough, falling for her brother might just make this reality show a
real nightmare.
Paige
Anderson agrees to be on a new reality show called
Treasure
Trekkers
,
a show where contestants use handheld GPS units to find hidden caches
filled with prizes, with her good friend Cassidy. But when Cassidy is
unable to compete, Chip Cormack, the show’s producer, steps in with
a last-minute replacement to be Paige’s partner - Zoe Oliver,
reality TV’s favorite bad girl.
Jack
Miles (aka Miles) is a mountain climber with the body to prove it.
Miles convinced his climbing partner Ben to come on the show with him
for one reason - to prove to Ben that they can still hike together,
regardless of the fact that Ben lost his foot in a tragic accident.
Miles isn’t about to let anything get in his way of winning - not
even beautiful Paige.
But
when Miles and Paige are thrown into an alliance with their
teammates, working closely together leads to more than just good
strategy. Can Paige steal Miles’ heart while surviving Zoe long
enough to win the game?

Excerpt
Paige
Anderson stood on the outskirts of the staging area under a clear
blue sky trying her best not to hurl on her new hiking boots. She’d
made a mistake. She didn’t stand a chance against teams like Mr.
Muscles and Friend—Team Everest, according to the official game
team names—or any of the others for that matter.

Speaking
of Mr. Muscles, every time she glanced his way—which seemed to be
more and more often—she’d catch him staring at her when he was
supposed to be engaging in conversation with his teammate. This time
when her eyes caught his, she noted his subtle eyebrow raise and a
tiny smirk pulling up the corners of his mouth. Combine that with his
light brown hair and sun-kissed skin, and it was hard to look away.
Not to mention a little twinkle of something interesting in his dark
chocolate eyes she couldn’t quite pinpoint but found incredibly
intriguing nonetheless. She tried to look away but it was difficult
when Mr. Muscles stood there with his arms folded across his chest,
biceps bulging against his thin cotton t-shirt.

Poor
material doesn’t stand a chance.

She
swallowed the sudden urge to comfort the pathetic t-shirt that looked
as if it were a single pushup away from tearing and forced her eyes
to keep moving. She couldn’t enjoy the man-candy competition fully
while her own teammate was still MIA.

Where
the hell was Cassidy? She should have arrived yesterday or the day
before like everyone else, and yet Paige hadn’t heard from her. Nor
had Cassidy answered any of the texts or voicemails she’d left
before the show’s producer Chip had confiscated her phone. How were
they supposed to survive on an adventure show if they couldn’t even
communicate their whereabouts before the show started?

Cassidy
and Paige had become fast friends the year before while on a
different reality show—one where they’d both vied for a
bachelor’s attention, along with eight other women. Out of all the
women on the show, Cassidy was the nicest and most beautiful and it
came as no surprise to Paige when not only the bachelor, but also a
cameraman, had fallen in love with Cassidy during the show.

Of
course, Paige hadn’t made it anywhere near the finale with bachelor
Brad. Nope. She’d been sent packing at the third
elimination—humiliated and crushed.

Thank
God this wasn’t another dating show. No chance of major televised
rejection to tarnish the experience. No sexy bachelor to distract her
and Cassidy from winning the money and prizes.

Her
eyes flickered back to Mr. Muscles again as if to prove her theory
wrong right from the start. Damn. He was built to climb mountains.
She’d like to climb his mountain.

Yeah,
right. In my dreams.

So I didn’t read the first book In the
series yet, but I didn’t need to for this one. It does well in a kind
of stand-alone as well. Not really hard to keep up.
The last thing Paige expected was to be
roped into doing another reality show, especially since her other
went so well (not). But it gave Paige a chance to have some fun with
her friend Cassidy, especially since its a treasure hunting show that
doesn’t eliminate anyone till the end, and the prize is a good chunk
of money. Unfortunately with unforeseen turn of events, Cassidy is
unable to participate in the show and Paige is stuck with Zoe – a
mean girl from her other reality TV show.
I have to say, the book draws you in
from chapter one. The tone and the characters and just the whole plot
I found appealing. I have not read a book about a reality TV show in
like…ever, so this was a very new experience for me. I loved the
tone, it was funny with a lot of smart ass comments and attitude.
Paige was sweet and in a way amusing. Her whole approach to the show
was suppose to be just having fun with Cassidy while they drive
around searching for treasure. Instead she is with Zoe, with a bit of
tension between them, so things get amusing at times. I like that she
felt so real at times, especially with her driving skills.
Zoe was a whole different animal. The
fact that she runs around on stilettos was odd for me, since I know
very few women that trot around in those like it’s second nature to
them. I myself would probably break both of my ankles trying to run
in heels. Thought she was annoying, she was funny and there is a
deeper side to Zoe beneath the bitch faced.
Mile was swoon worthy, and he comes
with his own baggage and guilt especially when it comes to his game
partner and friend, Ben. His connection to Zoe is interesting, but
his actions around Paige are kind of amusing and naughty.
The book was amazing. I loved that it
was funny, laced with interesting part, characters with depth and of
course don’t forget the steamy romance served on top. Definitely
looking more from this author.

Xpresso Book Tours: Otherborn by Anna Silver Review + Giveaway

April 10, 2013 Uncategorized 5

Otherborn  by Anna Silver
Series: Otherborn, #1
Publication: April 4th 2013 by Sapphire Star Publishing
Genre: YA Dystopian
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads
Synopsis:

London and her teenage friends live in a reprocessed world.

Confined
within Capital City’s concrete walls, London has done the impossible
and the illegal. She’s created something New- a song. But her mentor,
club owner Pauly, is not impressed. Since the historic Energy Crisis
forced everyone behind walls generations ago, the Tycoons have ensured
there is truly nothing new allowed under the sun. Pauly warns London to
keep her song to herself, if she knows what’s good for her.

What
he doesn’t know, is that London is keeping an even bigger secret: she
dreams. And she’s not alone. London’s band-mates and friends have begun
dreaming as well, seeing themselves in “night pictures” as beings from
another world. As Otherborn, they must piece
together the story of their astral avatars, the Others, in order to save
their world from a dreamless, hopeless future.

When Pauly is murdered and an Otherborn
goes missing, London realizes someone is hunting them down. Escaping
along the Outroads, they brave the deserted Houselands with only their
dreams to guide them. Can they find their friend before the assassin
finds them? Will being Otherborn save their lives, or destroy them?

Otherborn is the first book in a brand
new Dystopian series with a fantasy feel.
I found the first book interesting and
unique with the concept it brings to the table. It has been a while
since I have read a Dystopian book and although I enjoy them, I have
to admit that I rarely read them, so I was really glad when I got to
read Otherborn.
The story takes place years in the
future in a reprocessed Capital City, where people live in old hotels
and banks that are now made into homes and shelters. It takes years
after an Energy Crisis happens. Everything that they need is provided
to them by ratios and licenses, but they can only get things in
limited amounts while other things – such as technology isn’t
always provided and if it is – to people of higher rank. The world
is basically run by Tycoons, which makes me think of filthy rich
business owners today, and the Tycoons in turn run the government
like puppets. They use fear to scare people behind the walls of the
Capital City, and provide them with plenty of smokes that contribute
to the disgusting air surrounding it.
I liked the setting, it was very
different. A bit dark so far from what I can tell from the little
book. People end up stealing and going behind Tycoons backs in order
to get what they want. There is an underground network of Scrappers
who use it like a trading post in return of other items people
provide or ratios.
London is a special girl. She is a
dreamer and is therefor infections. She and the group of people that
got close to her, dream – which is something others of the new
world don’t. I never fully understood that part, and I am not sure it
was fully explained why the people don’t dream. Nor did I really
fully understand why they weren’t allowed to experience or do
anything ‘new.’ Which is apparently another ability that these people
are not suppose to have. But London and her friends (who she believes
are dreaming because of her) are able to do these ‘new’ things.
Anyway, the world building was
interesting, but it has me thinking a lot because there was a lot of
mystery and a lot of unanswered questions. It is the first book of
the series, and I like the foundation that was set up for the world,
but it left me wanting more.
The dreams that London and her friends
are having turn out to be more then just dreams. They are kind of
other people that are a part of them, which is were it gets also a
little confusing. They aren’t actually human, they are more well,
creature like that exists in another realm and plain but the dreamers
and their ‘others’ are connected. They have their memories and so
forth.
I liked the book I really did, even
thought some holes left me frustrated at times I really liked London.
She was kind of kick-ass with her own flaws. Her and Rye’s
relationship is kind of endearing, and there is a potential of more
romance to blossom from there. Rye obviously really cares for London,
and their affection for each other transcends space and time into
their ‘others’.
I am looking forward to finding out
more about this series and the world with future books. The storyline was interesting and had me hooked from page one. <3
Might not be suitable for some, as it features a lot of smoking.

Portrait of a Dead Guy (A Cherry Tucker Mystery #1) by Larissa Reinhart

Synopsis:

In Halo, Georgia, folks know Cherry Tucker as big in mouth, small in stature, and able to sketch a portrait faster than buckshot rips from a ten gauge — but commissions are scarce. So when the well-heeled Branson family wants to memorialize their murdered son in a coffin portrait, Cherry scrambles to win their patronage from her small town rival.

As the clock ticks toward the deadline, Cherry faces more trouble than just a controversial subject. Between ex-boyfriends, her flaky family, an illegal gambling ring, and outwitting a killer on a spree, Cherry finds herself painted into a corner she’ll be lucky to survive.

Charming, witty and a perfect start to
a brand new cozy mystery series.
Cherry Tucker graduated from college
and is now struggling to get her portrait painting business going,
minding the bills. As a struggling artist she cannot pick and choose
who her client are, so when she is asked to paint a picture of a man
that was found dead – she did not expect his step-mother to request
a picture of their murdered son in the coffin as is.
Portrait of a Dead Guy was a funny,
unique and lighthearted mystery in a small town with a southern
charm. We get to peak into some lives of the a town called Halo and
its residents and introduced to Cherry as she takes us for a ride
when she faces more trouble then she was willing to bargain for
between the murder, a gambling ring, ex-boyfriends and a killer on a
killing spree. I really enjoyed Cherry, she was kind of heart-warming
in her own way. Her conversations and interactions with other people
are amusing and as a character herself, I found her personality very
endearing.
We get a glimpse into Cherry’s past,
which consists of Todd – a hot drummer that she married in Vegas
and annulled the marriage just as fast. Along with Luke, an equally
hot military guy who was also Cherry’s ex-boyfriend from high school.
Both have a thing in common, dimples, and both make her swoon and
lose her mind. I have to admit, I find myself very curious about
these three as the books progress.
The plot in itself I thought was
original and different from some of the other mysterious I have read.
I also really enjoyed the dynamics of Cherry’s family, especially
between her sister, her brother, her grandfather and her uncle. The
mystery surrounding Cherry’s mother and the bad luck with men had me
hooked from the first few pages. Portrait of the Dead Guy had
everything I needed to get a good book fix, entertainment, humor,
light-hearted romance, unique and interesting plot…oh and of
course, a mystery :)
