Book
Description:

Allison
O’Malley just graduated from college. Her life’s plan is to get a job
and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She doesn’t have room for
friends or even Ethan, who clearly wants more.

When
Allison’s long-lost father shows up, he claims he can bring her
mother back from the dark place her mind has sent her. He reveals
legends of a race of people long forgotten, the Tuatha de Danaan,
along with the truth about why he abandoned her mother.

Interesting quick read that pulls you in from the very first page.
Allison O’Malley has lived with her grandparents for as long as she could remember, ever since her schizophrenic mother needed help.  After finishing college, her main focus ends up being able to take care of her mother and herself since she doesn’t want to burden to fall on her grandparents any longer. That makes her pretty much shut out everyone else out of her life except Nicole. Including Ethan, a guy who can’t seem to take her no’s as an answer.
I liked the story well enough. The beginning was eerie with the mystery and crows behind it and engrossing. The pace was nice too, it just kind of grips you from page one and before you know it your completely immersed in the storyline.
The story picks up when Liam, Allison’s father makes up appearance and buys the land next door. He claims that he can help save Allison’s mother and that her and Allison are in danger. It’s not until ALMOST half way to the book do we learn about a bit of old Irish folklore and a race of Tuatha de Danaan.
I did like Allison, I thought she had a lot on her shoulders with dealing with her mother, her episodes and everything on top of it. What I did not understand is why she treated Ethan over and over so poorly, especially when his intentions were pretty pure. (I guess I really liked Ethan!) I also had a hard time understanding why she didn’t tell anyone at all that her father was back in town, especially after he bought that plot of land. Her decisions at times left me kind of baffled. I really liked Allison and Ethan so it was kind of a shame that their story took a bit of a back burner as the book went on. I hope he is more active and around in book two.
I did enjoy the magic of this book and the faeries. It struggles a bit being a book one and a much shorter read, it lacks a bit of development but I hope that also gets fixed in the next book. Overall, I really enjoyed the idea. The fantasy world that the book throws you into is kind of fun and exciting, and did leave me craving for more. Laura Howards writing is quiet wonderful and I am looking for more of her stories!

Xpresso Book Tours: Fall From Love by Heather London Review + Giveaway!

June 27, 2013 Uncategorized 3

Fall From Love by Heather London
Publication date: June 7th 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

** I received a copy of this book for free in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis:
Struggling
to put her life back together after a tragic mountaineering accident
kills her college sweetheart, twenty-one-year-old Holly Treadwell is
trying to set aside her grief, forge ahead in school, and find herself
again.

When Carter Hansen, a guy who brings back horrible
memories from the night of the accident, finds his way back into her
life, Holly’s unsure  if she should let him in. He terrifies her in more
ways than one and invokes feelings in her that she thought were buried
forever. Regardless of her fears, she knows she must face him in order
for her heart to heal.

Everyone tells Carter that what happened
on the mountain that night was just a terrible accident, but even then,
he can’t help but carry around the guilt and is unable to forgive
himself. He’s drawn to Holly and being near her helps ease his
conscience and gives him the release he needs.

As Holly and
Carter’s relationship grows, they begin to realize that the more time
they spend with one another, the more their wounds begin to heal—her
grief and his guilt. But when Holly learns the details about the night
of the accident—what everyone has been keeping from her—it will rip open
old wounds and tear apart what they’ve both worked so hard to overcome…

A bittersweet story of tragic loss, healing, friendship, love and forgiveness.
When Holly’s college boyfriend of two years goes out on to his first mountain mission on the eve of their two year anniversary, Holly never imagines that it would be the last time she sees him nor that her world is suddenly ripped apart. The pain of losing a loved one so fast had left her hollow and dismissive towards her friends until the wounds slowly start to close up with the help of her best friend Jenna.
Ever since the night Carter held Holly in his hands while she cried and pounded on his chest, he cannot forgive himself for what happened on top of the mountain. Part of that nights rescue team, Carter feels like he should have done a lot more then night in hopes of protecting Adam - even if people keep telling him that it’s not his fault - the broken look in Holly’s eyes is enough to make him feel like it is.
The last person Holly ever expects running into on her first day out is Carter, the one person that brings back terrible memories of that night that she has a hard time facing.
Okay, I really enjoyed this book. The pace seemed just right. It started out with a bang. It breaks you, heals you, crumbles you then staples you back together. I admit, after just reading another NA novel about a loss, this one was held a softer blow for me because I felt ready for the punches, still reeling in emotions.
I liked Holly, I couldn’t help but feel so bad for her and everything she went through. But I also had a bit of a hard time understanding why she treated Carter so badly after that night and was unable to see him or talk to him when he came up to her. I kind of understood it was because he was part of the night that everything went so wrong, but at the beginning of the story Holly doesn’t know the details of the events - something all of her friends are apparently keeping from her.
Carter was just as broken. He feels death is following him everywhere he goes. Just dealing with death himself before the accident, he cannot help but feel responsible. Even if I and the other characters in the book did not feel that there was more he could do about it. Seeing Holly happy was like a release from his own skeletons in his closet. Watching her smile, lifted his own mood. I found that I loved his character.
The romance in this story starts slow. The two first become friends cautiously and then it blossoms into something more. I really liked the pace with this one because it didn’t jump into things and it made sense due to the circumstances. I liked that Carter struggled taking the next leap because he didn’t feel like he could do it without telling her what happened first. When the details of the night finally come out, it threatens the delicate ground the two had build to walk on.
Loved the story, was beautiful, touching, sad and lovely. I really enjoyed Heather’s writing and am looking forward to more of it.

Tasty Book Tours: Sinfully Summer by Aimee Duffy

June 24, 2013 Uncategorized 15

Sinfully
Summer
By:
Aimee Duffy

Blurb
SUN,
SEA AND SCANDAL
Notorious
heiress Alexa Green has certainly been enjoying her most recent
girls-holiday in Marbella. Just as we thought, she’s been knocking
back the cocktails and showing off her fabulous bikini body on the
beach… but rumour has it she’s also been spotted sneaking out of
Enrique Castillo’s penthouse in the early hours of this morning –
in nothing but her underwear! Our question is, doesn’t this
fiercely private billionaire know what he’s letting himself in for?
He’s
got the millions… and she knows how to spend them! So lie back on
your sun lounger and get comfortable, because this summer fling is
going to be a sizzler!

Excerpt
Adrenaline
roared through her veins. This was her only chance. Pushing away from
the wall, she rounded the lift, desperately seeking an escape. She
barely noticed the plush furnishings, soft-looking leather sofas and
floor to ceiling window which showcased the most spectacular view
she’d ever seen. Instead she focused on the walls surrounding the
elevator.
Are
you lost?’
The
heavily accented voice froze her to the spot. She darted a glance
toward the sound. Dark brows furrowed over the richest coloured eyes
she’d seen. His gaze swept over the length of her body, then up,
lingering on her rear for a beat too long. Her skin tingled under his
scrutiny.
Turning
her whole body to face him, she slapped a hand on her hip. ‘Had a
good enough look?’
His
lips quirked in a sexy, lopsided grin. The jitters were back and
Alexa swore the temperature in the room shot up ten degrees. Her gaze
dropped to his broad shoulders, covered in a thin white t-shirt, then
down to a well filled chest. She could see a dark pattern beneath the
t-shirt. She longed to find out what kind of tattoo he had. Usually,
tats didn’t do it for her. But on that body…
I
could ask you the same thing.’
She
snapped her attention back to his face. He stepped toward her, his
jaw set, his eyes dancing with humour and something darker…something
that made her blood heat and her mouth water.
Alexa
raised her arm, palm out. ‘Hold it there, Mr. Any closer and I’ll
scream.’
He
paused by the sofa. Propping his hip against the cream leather, he
folded his arms across his chest, causing the muscles to bulge. The
moisture drained from her mouth and flooded in her belly.
No
one’s here to hear you.’ He cocked a brow. ‘You seem to be
forgetting where you are and,’ his gaze dipped down to her breasts
causing the nipples to peak against the lacy fabric ‘how
underdressed.’
Alexa
thought this moment would have topped the blush scale. She planted
her other hand on her hip and glared at him, unwilling to show any
weakness. ‘I’m just leaving.’
She
turned and strode back to the lift, keeping her back straight and
trying not to wiggle her hips too much. The predatory sheen in his
eyes made her body more jittery than the idea of sprinting around the
lower floor in her underwear. She reached out to hit the button, but
a large hand circled her wrist before she made it.
Alexa
squeaked and darted back a step. He was so close, and his chest was
right in her face. She could see the dark outline of the tattoo
beneath the thin cotton. The outline of a burning sun, she thought,
or something that looked like a sun. Her hands itched to lift the
material and see for herself.
I’m
up here.’
She
snapped her gaze back up to his smirking face and took another step
back. His lips kicked up at the corners and his eyes darkened. She
swallowed against the urge to step closer, to feel his hard body
pressed against hers. But she realised she was in little more than
her bra and knickers in a stranger’s home. Unease skittered down
her spine.
Alexa
squared her shoulders, trying to quash the fear turning her heated
blood into cold sludge. ‘I’m leaving now.’
After
you explain what you’re doing in my home in your undergarments.’
Undergarments?’
Alexa pressed her lips together to keep a giggle at bay. ‘Seriously?’
Alexa Green is a use to be party girl heiress who is now trying to reinvent her life. She cannot help it though that paparazzi are still managing to grab pictures of her that end up looking trashy but completely out of context.
Enrique Castillo came from a rough life until he was adopted and all his indiscretions have been swept under the carpet. Now he runs one of the biggest Castillo’s hotels but wants to make his own name. The first step for him is to host a charity event ball for the children in need, and his going to use the fact that Alexa showed up in his penthouse in her knickers as blackmail in order to have her help him.

Sinfully Summer was a hot and delicious read, that was quick, funny, exciting and full of electricity. Really a wonderful summer read to lounge on a beach somewhere with your own set of cocktails. I absolutely loved Ric, he came back fighting his past and trying to make something out of himself and works hard in order to do it. But his a workaholic who no longer knows how to have fun since he immersed himself in his work. He was absolutely yummy. Strong, determined and knew just exactly how to manipulate Alexa despite the physical pull of attraction between them.

Alexa was different. For someone who was trying to reform her image and starting her own company, she sure spent a lot of time without a bra or panties wearing provocative clothing. Forcing Alexa to work for him in organizing the charity ball after she managed to scare away an important person, is more then Ric can bargain for. In a way, both of these characters were as good for each other as they were bad. Ric was there to help guide Alexa away from the trashy party girl image while Alexa was beating down all of the stiff walls he had managed to beat over the years.

The attraction between them was there from the moment Alexa ended up in Ric’s penthouse in her ‘underwear’ and it exploded through the book. All the teasing moments had me giggle. Despite Ric trying lead her in the right direction, she still manages to test his resolve.

I truly enjoyed Sinfully Summer and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys some guilty pleasure summer fun filled in the sun. But I also loved the fact that Ric’s past really carried a darker undertone to this book, which made it more rounded and exciting.

Summary from Goodreads

He’s no Prince Charming. She doesn’t have a pumpkin coach. Sometimes love is nothing like a fairy tale; it’s even better…

It’s Never Too LateThe
infamous Laura Falkner has returned to London society in disguise.
Determined to clear her father’s name, she becomes a companion to
elderly Lady Josephine—only to learn the woman’s nephew is none other
than Alexander Ross, the devilish Earl of Copley, the man Laura once
loved with all her heart. The same man who’d accused her father of theft
and forced them to flee England.

To Fall Head Over Heels In Love
Alex
has never forgotten Laura—or forgiven himself for letting her go.
Today, Laura is as lovely—and stubborn—as ever, and her attempts at
crime-solving are putting her in danger. The only way Alex can keep her
safe is to marry her. But how can this notorious rake convince Laura
that his heart is true…before the clock strikes twelve?

After her father’s get’s accused of stealing the Blue Moon Diamond, Laura watches her entire life change within a blink of an eye. Just when things looked like they were going great with Alex the Earl of Copley, she walks on him trying to apprehend her father and take him in for the stolen jewelry when a matching set of earrings is discovered in his desk drawer.

Now her father is dead, murdered on the streets on London and Laura comes back into the society that shunned her father in disguise. Her intentions are to find the real thief and murdered and bring justice to her father and clear his name. Little did Laura expect was to end up being a companion to Alex’s aging aunt with memory issues thanks to the London’s matchmaker who stuck her there.

Stroke of Midnight did have a bit of Cinderella undertones in it, which I think is what made this book that much appealing to me. I really enjoyed Laura, a girl who lost everything but would stop at nothing to bring down one of the society elite’s in order to prove that her father was innocent. Alex of course has his own doubts simply of what he knows about Laura’s father, which strains their relationship. Plus it doesn’t help that in order to save her father from Alex, Laura just happened to cut his cheek and leave a scar to remember her by.

I loved that it had an interesting story line, love, mystery, betrayal and eventually a wonderful HAE. The sparks between Alex and Laura still remain after so many years, but both of them feel a bit betrayed by the events that have unfolded and it’s going to take some healing of the heart. When Laura gets caught in the scandal of her own doing, she must marry Alex in order to save face with the society if she still wants to be able to find the man that accused her father.

I really liked both Laura and Alex. It was so sweet how she took care of his Aunt. Both obviously have issues they need to resolve, especially since Laura thinks that Alex is only marrying her out of lust and that so she can bare his heir. The mystery had me guessing until the very end and the culprit ended up being someone I wasn’t expecting but it all fell into place nicely and was a very enjoyable read!

After publicly
self-destructing over a heartbreak a year ago, bestselling romance
writer Piper James is now making nice with her publisher by agreeing to
teach Hollywood’s favorite action star how to act like he’s in love.
Only playboy Mick Blackwell has no clue what love looks like. When a
seductive heat ignites between Piper and Mick, she jumps at the chance
for a bit of fun between the sheets, but with two stipulations: she’s
kept out of the public eye and things end when she returns to New York.
Only Mick keeps changing the rules on her. Tempted by America’s favorite
bad boy, Piper is wondering how far she’s willing to bend…

Please help me welcome the author Robin Covington to the blog today. I read, reviewed and absolutely loved her last book His Southern Temptations and she was kind enough to answers some questions for the blog today!

  1. Can you
tell us a little about Playing The Part?
The harder they play . . . the harder
they fall.

After publicly self-destructing over a heartbreak a
year ago, bestselling romance writer Piper James is now making nice
with her publisher by agreeing to teach Hollywood’s favorite action
star how to act like he’s in love. Only playboy Mick Blackwell has no
clue what love looks like.

When a seductive heat ignites between
Piper and Mick, she jumps at the chance for a bit of fun between the
sheets, but with two stipulations: she’s kept out of the public eye
and things end when she returns to New York. Only Mick keeps changing
the rules on her. Tempted by America’s favorite bad boy, Piper is
wondering how far she’s willing to bend…
  1. How did you
come up with the inspiration to write this new book?
I troll celebrity
blogs and I love to watch awards shows – the glamour, the clothes,
the red carpet. It all so exciting. But, I was reading an article
about the downside of celebrity—the papprazzi, the way a public
image can become limiting on the celebrity, the strain on your
personal relationships, and I thought that it would be so fun to
explore all of that in a book.
And I was dying to
create hot movie star. ; )
  1. Which
character did you find the easiest to write and why?
Mick. I am not the
child of Hollywood royalty or an actor but I found it super easy to
connect with the double-life he has to leave. And, I also loved that
he didn’t have a pity party over his life—he loved, embraced and
lived it like crazy.
  1. How did it
feel to publish your first book?
I just celebrated
the one-year anniversary of releasing my first book, A Night of
Southern Comfort, and I still remember the exhilaration and awe at
seeing my words on m Kindle screen. Just amazing. And it never gets
old. I get an excited wobbly feeling in my stomach every time I
release a book – it is awesome!
  1. What
inspired you to become an author?
I have always
written and scribbled stories down but always thought that I would do
it “someday”. You know—after the kids, after the day job. But,
right after I turned 40 I had a close friend die of breast cancer and
I realized that I might never get that someday and if I wanted it bad
enough, I had to go get it. A week later I started my first book.
  1. What is the
toughest part of the writing process?
Sitting my butt in
the chair and writing. Keeping off the internet and all the other
shiny things that distract me. I don’t mind giving up TV or sleep
but it is hard to sit down and write sometimes.
  1. When it
comes to writing the male characters in your book. What is your
favorite type to write? or one you find the most easiest.
I love writing men
who are self-assured but are also confident enough to allow a woman
to see the real them. I like men with a military background or ones
who are physically active – mixed martial arts, running, or BASE
Jumping. I love a man who will take chances, They are easy to write
because a character with that much personal presence just jumps out
onto the page for me.
  1. How would
    you describe your writing style?
Sexy and modern
with a penchant for dry, sarcastic humor. And I love using curse
words . . . ; )
  1. Why did you
choose the genre you write and what do you like about it?
I actually write
both paranormal and contemporary romance but I love them both because
at their core they are character driven stories. Regardless of the
setting, it’s the emotional journey of the characters that I love
and that keeps my butt in the chair.
  1. What is
    your next project?
I am completing
Books 3 and 4 in my “Boys are Back In Town” series. Teague and
Beack are getting their stories and they will be out in late 2013.
Then I will be tackling a contemporary light paranormal and a book
about assassins in love.

Summary from Goodreads

Caitlin Mulchahy
doesn’t have much time for socializing now that her sisters’ handyman
business is thriving. For Dr. Jack Gannon-former Marine medic-keeping
the residents of Apple Grove healthy is a welcome distraction from the
haunting memories of his time served in Iraq. Although the two have
lived in the same small town their whole lives, Cait and Jack barely
know each other. That is until a stray puppy leads them to the same
place at the same time. But it will take more than one adorable canine
to get these two together-it’ll take a whole town.

Jack Gannon is back in town of Apple Grove and keeping it’s residents nice and healthy is a welcoming distraction from all the memories plaguing him from the time he served in Iraq. Caitlin Mulchahy is good with her hands and now that business is booming, there isn’t much time for anything else. Until the two meet by chances thanks to an adorable little puppy.
One Day in apple Grove was an adorable small town story. Caitlin Mulchahy had seen Jack Gannon before he left to serve, but when he comes back new circumstances make her see the guy in a whole new light. I truly loved the adorable puppy that Jack had found as a stray. Some of the scenes with him had me giddy with laughter because it reminded me so much with what I had to deal with when my golden retriever was a puppy and how much trouble he would get into before the end of the day.
So while One Day in Apple Grove has you laughing and following a leisurely paced story it deals with other issues as well. Jack Gannon is scared both physically and emotionally and sometimes has days that are just down right bad. With the help of Caitlin in his life and a new puppy, he has something else to keep his mind on and helping him heal. It was a touching story, I did feel really bad for Jack and what he had to go through.
Thought the pace stays the same through the book, and can be a bit slow - I truly enjoyed this authors writing and taking my time with the story allowing myself to indulge. By the end of the book is left me with a variety of emotions, but I was glad it ended on a happy note. It really had you feeling the small town setting with the authors writing and the supporting characters.
I am looking forward to more from this author and the small town life!

Summary from Goodreads

A Love Worth Fighting ForWhen
Slade McKennon comes looking for Mia Cooper, the Dawson sheriff’s only
mission is to keep her safe. But the wounded DEA agent isn’t ready to
trust the man whose past is so entwined with hers. Slade lives by his
own code of honor—one that prevents the widowed father from pursuing the
woman he’s known most of his life. But for the first time in ages, Mia
feels safe. And she’s finally starting to seal up the scars on both her
body and her heart. Can Slade and his sweet but aching son provide the
healing touch of love?

The Cowboy Lawnman is the fifth book in Cooper Creek series, but it reads fine as a standalone. Good quick read, but did not really stand out for me. I was hoping for my cowboy fix, and did not really get that. Thought it was sweet and easy for one of those days.
Mia Cooper is back in town after getting injured on her job and watching her partner/one of the good friends die - leaving behind a pregnant wife and children. She is having a difficult time because she is a DEA agent and now there is a strong possibility that Mia will never be able to use the arm she does everything with. So through the book she struggles with all kinds of pain of not being able to do things anymore - and now people are offering her help and she doesn’t know how to live relying on others.
It was a clean Christian Romance and I did like Slade. I though he was rugged, and a good father - but aside of him being a Sheriff I could not picture Slade as a cowboy. He comes with his own package. He is a father to a boy named Caleb and knew Mia since they were kids, he also married Mia’s best friend even thought Mia has been in love with him like forever…but never really said anything to him.
So they spend most of the book trying to figure out if their attraction for each other is right and if they should do anything about it, since his late wife was Mia’s best friend and it is now awkward. Mia does a great job filling the role of a mother to Caleb and it did hold some very touching moments between them that made my heart melt. I also liked the fact that Mia’s family who has adopted or fostered her, is so wonderful to her. The mother and father as well as her brothers all accept her and there is no resentment of any kind.
There was also a bit of a suspense thing, because of the case that Mia had been undercover working on when she got shot. Well the guy got out and was now looking for his missing money. The ending happened pretty quickly in the last few pages of the book and there was a lot of rehashing between Mia and Slade rather or not going forth as a couple is such a good idea.
Anyway, nothing spectacular, but a good quick, light read anyway.

A night in London’s
most exclusive bordello. Agent of the Crown Sir Martin Powell would not
normally indulge, but the end of his time spying against Napoleon
deserves a victory celebration. Yet, such pleasure will not come cheap.
The auburn-haired courtesan he calls “Kitten” is in truth Katherine,
Lady Egerton, a dowager baroness and the daughter of an earl as elusive
as she is alluring. She flees a fate worse than death. But Martin has
known darkness, too, and he alone can touch her heart—as she has touched
his. To the English Midlands they will steal, into the rising winds of
revolution.

What a wild and emotional ride! Regan Walker really knows how to weave and tell a story.
The moment I cracked open the book and started reading it, Against The Wind and Walker did not hold back any punches. It gripped me emotionally from the start and I had a hard time putting it down. Found myself simply eating up the rest of the pages.
I have to admit, I did not expect the book to start the way it did but it laid out the foundation for the rest of the book. It was suppose to capture my interest and it did it’s job.
Martin Powell is finally back after spying against Napoleon for the Crown. A broken man who finds himself in London’s most exclusive bordello in hopes for some normal night of sinful indulgence with a woman.
Katherine is on the run in hopes of finding a safe place to hide in fear that she had killed her brother-in-law who tried to get his hands on her and take advantage of her shortly after her sister’s death. She finds herself running to her old nanny who happens to own the bordello and after a night of losing herself in her passion when Martin stumbles into her room by mistake.
Martin cannot get the auburn-haired beauty out of his mind and the need to find her and save her grows painful by the second, Not too mention that he cannot forget the night they have spent together and Martin want’s to make the beauty his mistress.

Wonderfully written, kind of beautiful in it’s descriptive writing. I adored Katherine and her fiery spirit. Both her and Martin are just two very broken people that end up getting thrown together by mistake. As danger follows his ‘kitten’, Martin does everything in his power to keep her safe and in hopes that history won’t repeat itself.
Walker does a wonderful job providing us with a story that hold memorable characters that are very believable with the time period. The story itself takes you straight into action and has you holding in for the ride. I am looking forward to revisiting the other books written by Regan Walker, and her future works alike!
