Summary
from Goodreads:
New
York City 1984: It’s Emerald Kipp’s sixteenth birthday, and
nothing has changed. She’s still the biggest loser in school, she’s
still trying to find a place for herself and yeah, she’s still a
witch. Her last year of high school is turning out to be the worst
yet, and Emerald thinks it can’t possibly get any worse.
Unfortunately for her, she’s dead wrong.

East Hampton, NY
1658: The Pennyfeathers are the black sheep of their small English
settlement. As hard as they try to keep the family secrets just that,
the magical bunch just can’t seem to fit in. But when a High
Priestess witch chooses 16-year-old Margo Pennyfeather as an
apprentice, Margo’s luck finally begins to change. What she doesn’t
know, is there’s a lot more to her apprenticeship, and to being a
witch, than she could ever imagine

Discover the mysterious
beginnings of The Empire Witch Series in “The Skinwalker’s
Apprentice: An Emerald Kipp Novella.”

Cute story about two teenage girls in two different eras who are just trying to survive being different. Emerald is a teenage girls in 1984 and she believes her aunt when she saw that they are probably the last two remaining witches. She has a hard time because she wishes she could use her magic more often but her aunt has put a cap on that. It’s bad enough that surviving high school isn’t easy, she is about the face something bigger.
Margo is a teenager in 1658 living in a town where her family also cannot reveal to be witches in fear of what the town people will do. She is selected as an apprentice and if she can get through the training, she could one day join The Coven and save her family from the poverty that has befallen them.
Interesting story. I liked the way the author did this, releasing the prequel to her up and coming series. According to this, Emerald will probably be the main character of the story but I won’t lie. I liked reading Margo’s chapter’s better. I thought it was more exciting and dealt with a lot more magic. Her chapter’s I believe are meant to give us a background history of the series, and I thought they where done well.
I like the magic and the adventure I found it very thrilling and I cannot wait to see what the author actually has in store for us later on. The only few qualms I had about this book is the fact that it read more like a MG novel then YA novel. Besides the magic described to be as colorful…Emerald for her age felt a bit immature to me in her actions. She is a girl who get’s in trouble in school often and I think it says she is in her final year before college? So she stages the biggest prank of her life in school and doesn’t realize before hand the consequences of her actions.
Also the music that was used in that age and fantasy novel was a bit odd to me. Not something I expected. Emerald is big on music, so it seems to be part of her story a lot.
Overall a decent start to a new series and I am curious to see where Emerald will mature from here.

Series: Walkers Ford

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Heat Rating: Steamy-ish

Summary from Goodreads

They can’t hide from desire…

After life as a cop in Denver leaves him burned-out, Lucas Ridgeway
returns to Walkers Ford, South Dakota, to serve as their chief of
police. He’s hoping to start over with a clean slate and avoid any
emotional entanglements—even after his next-door neighbor kisses him
senseless. Alana is passionate, dedicated, and most importantly leaving
town soon. So why not have some fun?

Alana Wentworth comes from a
larger-than-life political family, yet all she wanted was to be a
librarian. Then after an embarrassing marriage proposal from Mr.
Not-For-Her, she jumps at the chance to live her dream for a few months.
She wasn’t supposed to get involved with the community—or sexy,
troubled Lucas. But when the time comes for Alana to put Walkers Ford
behind her, she’s not ready. And Lucas may not be ready for her to go…

Alana Wentworth comes from a large political family. After an embarrassing public proposal, she takes the opportunity to act as a stand in librarian in a small town of Walkers Ford and escape a life she never thought was meant for her. Lucas Ridgeway returned to Walker’s Ford to serve as their chief of police after an incident in Denver bringing him back home to start over. He doesn’t want any distractions but the blushing librarian next door is proving to be one he cannot ignore.
Cute story. I juggled between 3.5 stars and 4 stars on this one, and in the end I decided to give it 4 for many reason.
  • I really enjoyed the romance. I felt the sparks between them and so much more. The interaction between Lucas and Alana was comfortable and easy. After reading a bunch of heavy stuff, this was rather welcoming. There was sparks and of course just the right amount of chemistry.
  • It takes place in a small town and if you been following me for a while you know I love my small town romances. They make me all warm and fuzzy on the inside with their small close knit community and recurring characters. Speaking of which, thought I have not read the first book, I did look to see who was in it and Adam and Marissa do appear in this book as well!
  • The pace of the book was pretty good. The story flowed and I found myself really immersed in it. Sure there was some parts that were kind of slow in the end but they where brief and minor and did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the book.
  • I liked the storyline, especially in the end. Alana was not meant to stay in Walker’s Ford. She was there to propose a project in rebuilding the library and in the end managed to show the community how important the library was to the town and it’s people. How many of them it has helped, and how central it was to the community.
  • Lucas. A brooding chief of police with a retired police dog named Duke? Yes please. Thought Lucas did manage to get on my nerve at times, I was so glad that in the end he allowed to town and it’s appeal to kind bring down his own walls and start to actually help people a little more on a personal level. I did not like how he treated Cody and Tanya at first, but everything clicked nicely in the end!
  • I liked the supporting characters. There was trouble and people who come from broken homes and Alana had managed to get entangled with each and one of them and make an impact on their lives. Even Lucas had bought down his walls in the end. I really loved that he did not give up on his cousin Tanya and had drug addiction as much as Alana did not give up on a teenager by the name of Cody who also came from a broken home.
  • The writing. Calhoun did a wonderful job in luring me into the story that I found myself invested in the small town and connecting with her characters.
Lovely story, so much more then just a romance I liked the other stuff that was going on in the background just as much. Of course I enjoyed the romance in this book as well. Thought a part of me wishes she didn’t jump into Lucas bed right off, since I do love and enjoy the build up more. It did seem to work!
Looking forward to more from Walker’s Ford and it’s characters :) with familiar faces.

ARC Review: The Scandalous Duke Takes a Bride (Dangerous Rogues #3) by Tiffany Clare

The Scandalous Duke Takes a Bride (Dangerous Rogues #3) by Tiffany Clare

Expected publication:
February 25th 2014
by St. Martin’s Paperbacks

Paperback, 352 pages

Series: Dangerous Rogues

Genre: Historical Romance
Heat Rating: Steamy to somewhat Sizzling

Amazon | The Book Depository Goodreads

Summary from Goodreads

In this dazzling Dangerous Rogues novel, a daring and dangerously
handsome duke will do anything for the woman he loves—even if it sparks a
scandal.

FRIENDS AND LOVERS…

As a
wealthy young widow, Lady Jessica Heyer must endure the closest of
scrutiny and most wicked of rumors from society gossips. Their whispers
would be utterly unbearable if it weren’t for her oldest friend, the
Duke of Alsborough. Jessica knows she can always count on Hayden. What
she never could have expected, however, is that he is deeply, madly in
love with her…

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

For
years, Hayden has kept his longing for his beautiful friend Jessica a
secret. But now that she’s finally free to remarry, will she be willing
to take their relationship to a more intimate level? He’ll get his
answer soon—at a glittering masquerade, where identities are hidden,
hearts are open, and true love is unmasked…in a single, shameless act of
passion.

Oh how lovely!
It has been quiet some time since I got my hands on a historical romance novel, let alone a book that featured a theme of friends to lovers!
Lady Jessica Heyer has just become a wealthy young widow. But as a lady she has to endure scrutiny and rumors from the society gossips. Her own marriage was less then stellar. Married to a wicked man that has made her married life a living nightmare, his actions still haunt her from far beyond the grave.
The only thing that makes this living nightmare any better is Duke of Alsborough, Jessica’s most dearest and oldest friend. What Jessica does not realize is that Hayden harbors feelings for the young widow and is ready to take her on as his bride besides the scandal their arrangement might bring.
Such a sweet and cute story. The beginning starts out with a heart-break from the cruelty Jessica’s late husband inflicts on her before his death. Now because Jessica cannot and did not provide her late husband with an heir, she is being forced out of her house. If that is not bad enough, the society has managed to turn the other way on her and a certain newspaper gossip column keeps spreading ugly rumors. I liked Jessica. I thought she was a strong character to still be standing after everything her husband had done to her. Hayden was just as wonderful, for being so caring and protective. All he wants to do is take her pain away. He has been in love with Jessica for quiet some time now and is ready to give her a proper life and save her from the scrutiny of the society.
Jessica isn’t ready to admit to her true feelings for Hayden. Thought she knows she must remarry in order to survive, she has a hard time making the transition when it comes to her best friend. She has rightfully so to take her time to decide even with Hayden urging her to move forward with her decision quickly.
The story had romance, touching moments, chemistry and of course a little bit of action and scandal. It was my first dip into Clare’s writing and so far I have enjoyed from what I have seen of her writing. The only thing that did not make this book a couple four stars for me was a bit of the plot felt hurried. Especially the whole deal with the person behind the gossip column. With only 90% left of the book, I was getting nervous it wouldn’t tie everything up. It did manage to end on a great note. I will be looking to more stories from this author.

Here is the weeks question.

What was the last book that made you cry?

The last book I remember shedding some tears over was for

Blackmoore: A Proper Romance by Julianne Donaldson
but going through my list I realize that I have not read a lot of books that had made me bawl like a baby with the exception of one or two earlier in the year.
Blackmoore was a nice clean historical romance with an ending that left me feeling a little choked up because just when I thought it was going to be left the way it did… it turned out to be beautiful!

I love my followers via GFC or Bloglovin <3 Will follow back

Xpresso Book Tours: Five – Out of the Dark (Five #1) by Holli Anderson Review

Five – Out of the Dark (Five #1) by Holli Anderson
Published by: Curiosity Quills Press
Publication date: August 20th 2013
Genres: Paranormal, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

* I got a copy of this book from the tour organizer in exchange of an honest review.

Five teenagers who’ve recently discovered they have magical powers and
are living in the Seattle underground feel it’s their
responsibility to protect unsuspecting humans from otherworldly foes.
Things are going well until Johnathan, their unofficial leader and the
boy sixteen year old Paige is in love with, is bitten by a changeling –
the venomous saliva causing him to metamorphose into a ravening beast
with each full moon. Paige vows that, no matter the cost, she will find a
way to cure Johnathan of the evil that has embedded itself in his soul.

Johnathan’s
monthly transformation and daily personality roller coaster isn’t the
only problem they have to deal with. The Five are also gearing up to
face their toughest and most dangerous enemy yet—a powerful and ruthless
Warlock who will go to any means, including high school, to build his
Dark Army.

Different!
When Paige first discovers her power, she doesn’t realize how the world around her was going to change. Being a preacher’s daughter, her father believed she was practicing Dark Arts and tried to have her taken away. Devastated she makes a run for it and is discovered by Johnathan. The two quickly learn that both are magic users and that there are three more of them like it out there. As the pace of the story quickens, we meet all Five within a few pages. The teens take on the task of learning their magic while living underground on limited food sources. Unfortunately when Johnathan their leader gets bitten by a changeling, it not only transforms his personality but also turns him into a beast with each full moon.
Ah okay. The story was cute. It took off very fast and I mean fast. It had my head in a spin for a first few pages. I was really glad that it finally did slow down and developed it’s slowly much slower so we got to experience it a bit better.
Paige was an interesting character. Thought the book was from her POV, I had a really hard time connecting with her. She was a bit possessive over Johnathan right away and there is a bit of insta-love going on here, since the first half of the story happens so rapidly. I did enjoy seeing her character slowly grow by the end of the book, but I still had a hard time connecting with her. I think I would have liked a dual point of view, or maybe Johnathan telling the story because he was one of my favorite characters. I liked that despite his change, he still had a lot of heart and I thought at the beginning of the book with the way he took these kids in made him a great leader.
The story itself is filled with a lot of different paranormal creatures. Thought I enjoy paranormal and always love my creatures, it felt a little crammed. There was a lot of different ones mentioned at the beginning of the book that I think would have made other people feel kind of intimidated with the amount of information. The book itself is endearing but takes on a tone more for MG kids over Young Adults. I thought some monsters felt a bit silly to me. If taken the darker elements out of it, it would have been a better fit for the much younger crowd.
I did enjoy the story. It was a welcoming relief from the much intenser stuff and I did like the addition of the warlock and the darker side of magic. It be interesting to see if Paige continues to grow and of course I always want more of Johnathan!

AUTHOR BIO

Holli Anderson has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing—which has nothing to
do with writing, except maybe by adding some pretty descriptive injury
and vomit scenes to her books. She discovered her joy of writing during a
very trying period in her life when escaping into make-believe saved
her. She enjoys reading any book she gets her hands on, but has
a particular love for anything fantasy.

Along with her husband, Steve, and their four sons, she lives in Grantsville, Utah—the same small town in which she grew up.

Summary from Goodreads

A beautiful princess
lies in a sleep so deep it is close to death. Was Sleeping Beauty
revived by a prince’s kiss? What really happened in that tower so long
ago?

While Beauty Slept re-imagines the legend through the lens
of historical fiction, telling the story as if it really happened. A
Gothic tale of suspense and ambition, love and loss, it interweaves the
story of a royal family and the servants who see behind the glamorous
facade, following the journey of a young woman as she lives out a
destiny that leads her to the brink of death.

WOW!
Let me tell you. Not at all what I had expected. When I read the summary of this book on Penguin’s website, I loved the fact that the book was written through the lens of historical fiction and retelling it as if it could have really happened. Gone are the fairies, the dragon and evil magic and replaced by something more realistic and dark.
The story is told from Elise’s point of view. A young woman who grew up on a farm, survived the on-slaughter of Pox that claimed almost all of her family and escaped to a small town in hopes of getting a position in the castle. Thanks to her mother’s background and previous history of working for the castle, she is welcomed by the woman in charge of the maids. Elise started out as a chamber maid, but her mother’s teachings and the ability to read had progressed Elise into eventually becoming the Queen’s personal attendant.

Thought she now lives in a lifestyle that she felt she was born to of lavish and glamor. Only the royal family and it’s servants know what’s underneath the facade, and the dark secret’s inside the castle walls. Especially Elisa, a girl who came from nothing but become the most trusted lady in the castle with both the Queen and her family.

The sacrifice the Queen had to make in order to bare a child and a heir to the throne. Her journey itself was  long and perilous. What was offered as a help from the aunt Millicent had turned into something that had cost the Royal family and it’s people far more upon Princess Rose’s birth.

A story filled with suspense, secrets, sacrifice, loyalty, love and devotion. Blackwell takes us on a beautiful yet a dark rendering of Sleeping Beauty that had me savoring every page. The story did not read lightly, it was complex yet gorgeous. I didn’t devour it in one sitting, it took me a few days allowing the story to sink in bit by bit, relishing the amazing storytelling.

I jumped into the story head first. Thinking I knew exactly what was coming and I was rewarded with so much more. I loved Elisa and hated her at the same time. She poured her heart and soul at serving her Queen and eventually becoming Lady-in waiting to Rose. Her devotion to both the Queen and the Princess ran far deeper then her own feelings. She had put aside her own life, her own love in order to serve the Royal family and the result was beyond astronomical in the effect she has had on Rose in the end.

The ending took me by surprise, once again thinking that I knew exactly what was coming but Elizabeth Blackwell has managed to blow everything out of the water. Ending up with a conclusion that was not what I expected after all. I did like this different take on Sleeping Beauty ending.

I could keep on talking about this book, but there was just so much in it that I do not want to give away. Thought the pacing was a bit slow sometimes, I took it as an opportunity to fully enjoy the story. If you love a good historical fiction, I would absolutely give this one a shot.

Xpresso Book Tours: The Polaris Uprising (Polaris #1) by Jennifer Ibarra

The Polaris Uprising by Jennifer Ibarra
(Polaris #1)

Publication date: October 30th 2013
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

* I got a copy of this book from the tour organizer in exchange of an honest review.

In less than seven years, eighteen-year-old Ryla Jensen will succeed her
father as the president of Neress, a nation where all citizens
are cared for from the moment they’re born. Fed, sheltered,
even educated—every need of theirs is met.

The only price they pay is their free will.

Groomed
since childhood to take on a role she’s not even sure she wants, Ryla’s
only escape from the pressures of duty is her sister, Alanna. But when
her eyes are opened to the oppressive regime her father built, she
begins to question everything she’s set to inherit—and finds herself at
odds with her sister’s blind allegiance to their father.

Torn
between loyalty to her family and the fight for freedom, Ryla must
decide just how far she’s willing to go to make a stand and risk losing
the person she loves most in the world: Alanna.

I was so excited upon receiving this book for review for Xpresso Book Tours that I just jumped right in, especially since I have been having an increasingly good luck with authors that are new to me lately.
The story is about two very different sister’s that are daughter’s of the president of Neress. They live in The Palace under their father’s rule. Ryla is the youngest, and the more ambitious. She is to one day when she turns of age to take over her father’s role and become the president of the country. Alanna is the oldest, who opens up her own clinic and is already set to marry Owen. In a country where jobs are decided based on your aptitude and marriage on your best genetic make up and not love, citizen’s are believed to have been taken cared of since the day they are born.
Until Ryla finds herself open up to a world she never knew existed and the things that her father might have been promising and telling them behind close doors, that are far from the truth. As Ryla is set to take over her father’s position, she also starts to learn that the world her father had told her about and what is out there is completely different.
Twisted, thrilling, an absolutely exciting. Ibarra delivers a well put together first start of a new series. The plot was intriguing and very much character driven. Luckily I found both sisters to be very good at it, and the two different stories and different events that they had to lead had really effected their characters in the end. I loved Alanna and Owen and I absolutely liked Ryla and Tyson in the end as well. There is friendship and struggles and romance that even with a cliffhanger ending had you savoring and wanting every moment.
There is only but one thing that really bothered me and that was the fact that this book had elements similar to Landry Park. A naive daughter set to take over and not allowed to go to a University. A tyrant father who believes that his rule is for the best. A bunch of lower ranked people who are afraid of their own shadow thanks to the rules. And secrets that are also revealed to the main character by the boy love interest.

In the end thought, it did have it’s own appeal that did make it different and I applaud Jennifer for bringing this novel to the table.

AUTHOR BIO

fantastic feats of the imagination. Her debut novel,
