Summary from Goodreads

Zombies, killer dresses, and ancient curses prove that Halloween in Threadville can be sew spooky…

It’s early October, and hordes of visitors have descended on the tiny,
celebrated village of Threadville, Pennsylvania, to attend a Halloween
crafts fair, a zombie retreat, and the wedding of Edna Battersby—dear
friend to Willow Vanderling, owner of the chic machine embroidery
boutique, In Stitches.

As a friendly prank for Edna’s wedding,
Willow and the rest of the Threadville gang have fashioned an overly
extravagant hoopskirt, complete with lights and music. But in a bizarre
turn of events, the garish gown is implicated in a mysterious lakeside
murder.

Now Willow must follow a trail of glow-in-the-dark
thread, delve into ancient Egyptian curses, and creep through a haunted
graveyard to unearth a killer—before she becomes the next fashion
victim…

The zombie convention is here in Threadville, but so is the wedding for Edna Battersby. It’s early October and Willow Vanderling has a lot going on her plate right now. With her friends wedding just around the corner, Willow and the local shop owners come together to design a special surprise wedding gift for their dear friend Edna. Too bad that the extravagant hoopskirt that lot put together ends up implicated in a murder when they pull a woman dress in it out of local lake.

Not to mention with everything that’s going on, she ends up with a very annoying house guest forced on her by her very own mother. Now Willow finds it hard not to get herself involved, especially when some of the clues end up leading the detectives straight to her back door.

Interest addition to the Threadville Mystery series. The author seems to know a lot about embroidery and it’s full of details in the book. Honestly it felt a little too much sometimes for someone that knows nothing about it, but it was interesting! It was pleasant to see all the details and the knowledge about the instruments and such surrounding embroidery and how the author used it in the book and had the character solve the clues.

I found Willows house guest very annoying and quiet frankly she made the book difficult to read at times. The girl was downright mean, rude, and I did not understand her anger and resentment towards Willow - I did not feel what her excuse was justified that. I also wish Willow would stand up to her mother more often, so I hope to see growth there. The woman doesn’t look like she has Willow’s interest best at heart but all for herself. I know Willow wants to make her mother happy but really… taking on a guest that made her life miserable during the stay did not seem to be worth it. Nor the way her mother talks to her on the phone.

Great mystery was exciting, filled with Zombies, curses, details and fun characters. Was an interesting read and I am looking forward for more of Willow.

Summary from Goodreads

Talia Hall has long been in love with her
adventurous friend James Forester, Baron Castleford. But rather than
explore their mutual attraction, James chooses a
year-long expedition over Talia. He discovers his
mistake when he returns to London and finds himself desperately drawn
to Talia’s fiery beauty. However, now the storms of their irresistible
passion might be too turbulent to endure.

The moment I saw Nina Rowan’s new
book in her Daring Hearts series I knew I had to read it. I absolutely
adored her second book, so naturally I was very drawn to this one. It
did not disappoint, not even for a moment. Nina Rowan’s writing is
amazing, her storytelling and developing is creative and her characters
are very well fleshed out.

This story follows Talia
Hall who has been in love with her childhood friend for a very long
time. James Forester is an adventurer. He doesn’t want to be tied down
to London alone, he wants to go out and explore the world. So it was
much to his surprise when one evening right before leaving for a year
Talia corners him to confess her love for him. Even thought he
rejected her - for the fear that marrying Talia could change a lot of
things - that one kiss they shared before he left kept Talia on his mind
and in his dreams.

Oh what a lovely story. Nina has a
way of writing Historical romances that aren’t just about the romance.
There is a storyline in between what’s going on. Nina wants to make a
difference in the society by exposing the unjust ways the prison treats
young boys and hopes that they can carry out a program to help the
juvenile delinquents learn how to read and write and properly fit into
the London society. As Talia tries to stumble through several
obstetrical in her way, including the prison’s deputy - James makes an
unexpected return home and sparks fly.

Talia and James
relationship in the book was so sweet even if it felt rocky. The
attraction and the depth of the passion between them is quiet clear
from the start. It is obvious that James cares about her, and even
thought there had been certain spots in the book where I believed he
needed a book slap to the head - he did tend to redeem himself along the
way. The interaction between them was witty and I enjoyed watching
James step into the role of trying to help her, despite wanting to keep
Talia at an arms reach.

Talia is a fiery woman who is
trying to escape the shadows of her mother, who had an affair and left
her father for another man. She is fine not getting married if she
cannot have James, as her focus is on reforming the way a prison for the
young boys are run. She has a lot of passion for what she does, head
strong and won’t stop at nothing. Talia was an awesome character and it
was so easy to root for her cause as well as the blooming relationship
between her and James.

Like I said. I adore Nina’s
writing and can sit and talk about her work here all day. Her historical
romance novels I feel are unique and well-developed. I absolutely love
how she sticks to the story in between and not just the romance instead
of cramming it all in the end. I am looking forward to more.

NEVER FORGOTTEN by Kelly Risser
NEVER FORGOTTEN by Kelly Risser is an upcoming New Adult Paranormal Romance published by Clean Teen Publishing. This paranormal love story is scheduled to release on July 1, 2014

How can one day go so very wrong? One minute Meara Quinn is making plans for how she will spend the Summer before her senior year and the next she’s finding out that her mother’s cancer has returned and they are moving away from the only home she’s ever known.
Now every day is a struggle as Meara is trying to cope with her mother’s illness, being forced to move to another country to live with grandparents—whom she thought disowned her mother—and having weird visions of a father who was absent her entire life. Top it all off with one whopping secret that everyone seems bent on keeping from her, and Meara has the perfect ingredients for a major melt down.
The only things keeping her from coming unglued are some new friends and Evan—the son of her mother’s childhood friend—who seems to know Meara almost better than she knows herself.
Together with Evan and her friends, Meara embarks on a new journey to unlock the secrets that will not only tell Meara who she is, but whatshe is.

All changes, even the most longed
for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves;
we must die to one life before we can enter another.

-       Anatole France

READ THE FIRST CHAPTER OF NEVER FORGOTTEN NOW:

Chapter 1

Present Day

“Meara, come visit the ranch. I’m sure Uncle Jake won’t mind.”

It was the second to last day of my junior year. I sat on the low, brick wall in front of Cedarburg High with my best friend, Kim. We were waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up. I didn’t care for Mark. I kept my opinion to myself, so I wouldn’t hurt Kim’s feelings.

Kim would be working at her uncle’s farm in Minnesota this summer. I was staying here. We wouldn’t see much of each other, unless I visited her.

“I don’t know, Kim,” I said. “I’m scheduled to work most of the summer at the shop.” My mom’s friend owned a sewing and fabric store in downtown Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Mom and I both worked there. Rebecca and Mom taught classes, made quilts, and ran the store. I maintained the website and worked the cash register.

“You could get away for a week or two,” Kim persisted. “Just ask your mom, Meara. You’ll never know unless you ask.”

“All right, I’ll ask!” I laughed at her scolding tone. I said it to appease her, but the idea was interesting. Why couldn’t Mom and Rebecca run the shop for a week or two without me? They did it during the school year.

“I’m heading home.” I stood up and walked down the sidewalk. Mark pulled up to the curb in his crappy, old truck. There was no point exchanging words with him, so I avoided eye contact.

“Don’t forget to ask!” Kim yelled after me.

I turned back and grinned. “Why do you think I’m leaving now?” My smile slipped when I noticed Mark eyeing a group of freshmen girls. He exchanged meaningful looks with a tall blond. I wouldn’t doubt if they hooked up at a party or something. Kim trusted him too much. When was she going to wake up and see him for the jerk he was?

“Mom? Hey, Mom, I’m home!” I yelled into the house as I always did, tossing my backpack on the bench in the front hall. When she didn’t respond, I figured she wasn’t home yet. Sometimes she stayed late to help Rebecca restock or change the window display. Heading to the kitchen to get a snack, I found Mom standing at the sink.

“What’s for dinner?” I asked and kissed her cheek. Not waiting for an answer, I took a carrot off the cutting board and opened the refrigerator. I was so preoccupied in my search for something tastier than a carrot, that it took me a few minutes to realize she hadn’t responded. I turned and looked at her. “Mom?”

She didn’t respond. She washed the same dish over and over, staring out the window. What was going on? My mom was many things, but a daydreamer wasn’t one of them. I walked over, placed my arm around her waist, and gave her a small squeeze.

“Meara!” She jumped and squealed. “You startled me. I didn’t even hear you come in.”

“Are you okay?” I asked. Her eyes were shadowed and sunken with dark circles. Mom never looked this exhausted. She was the most optimistic, dynamic person I knew. She exuded so much energy that she tired me out.

“Fine.” She wouldn’t meet my eyes. “Why do you ask?” “Because I’ve been talking to you, and you didn’t answer.” “Oh, sorry,” she said. “I didn’t hear you.”

“Or notice when I kissed your cheek,” I added.

She looked startled. “I guess I was lost in my own thoughts.”

I touched her arm. “What’s going on, Mom? You’re not acting like yourself.”

She smiled at me. My mom had a great smile, but this one worried rather than comforted me. It was fleeting, and it never reached her eyes. She touched my hair and motioned to a chair. “Honey, why don’t you sit down? I need to talk to you about something.”

Uh-oh. Whatever this was, it wasn’t good. Mom sat first and waited until I was seated. She took my hands in hers, holding them so tightly that it was painful. I resisted the urge to cry out or pull my hands away. She seemed to need the contact. We sat in silence while she clenched my hands, then she sighed and closed her eyes. Tears escaped in a trail down her cheeks.

“I saw Dr. Maxwell today.” Her voice was so quiet that it took me a moment to understand what she said.

“Dr. Maxwell?” I was confused. Dr. Maxwell was my mom’s oncologist; he treated her breast cancer five years ago. “Why didn’t you tell me you had an appointment today?”

She sighed and touched my cheek, “I didn’t want to scare you. I actually went in for some tests about a month ago, and he asked me to come back.”

I couldn’t believe that she kept this from me. “You’re okay, right?”

When she tried to smile, her lips just quivered. She shook her head and began to cry in earnest. Big, wet tears slid down her pale cheeks. “Meara, he said the cancer is back. Only this time, he found it in my intestines, liver, and kidneys. This new growth is aggressive. ‘Stage 4,’ Dr. Maxwell called it.”

I blinked back my own tears. While my mother, who was so strong, sobbed next to me, I thought about the first time she had cancer. I was in sixth grade, and the severity of her situation hadn’t sunk into my twelve-year-old brain. Mom had been so strong, first going through a lumpectomy and then enduring months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She lost her hair and got so thin. I remember feeling each individual rib in her back when I hugged her. It was agonizing to watch the person I loved most in the world wither away in front of me. Thankfully, the treatments took effect, and she slowly got better. The doctor gave her a clean bill of health a year after her original diagnosis.

“You can fight it, right?” I asked.

“Dr. Maxwell recommends slowing the growth with chemotherapy and radiation.” Mom composed herself a bit, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. I followed her movements, and my eyes tracked the long, black streak her mascara left on her hand. After I handed her a napkin, she dabbed at her eyes and added, “He says surgery is not an option. It’s too far spread.”

“What does that mean?” I was angry now. Why would the doctor advise her not to operate?

Mom took a deep breath, and I sensed how much it pained her to say these next words. “If they open me up, I might never heal. My prognosis is six months to two years, perhaps a little longer with intense treatment.”

It wasn’t what I expected to hear. The horror of it made me jump from my chair and bolt into her arms with gut-wrenching sobs. “Oh, Mom. I don’t want to lose you.”

“Oh, baby, and I don’t want to leave you.” Mom held me tight, and we clung to each other and cried. Her body shook as she sobbed. I held her as tight as I could. I hoped to give her comfort and take my own in return. When we couldn’t cry anymore, we simply sat together, each of us lost in our own miserable thoughts. After a while, Mom straightened up and pulled away. She wiped her face with another napkin.

“We’ll make the most of our time together, okay?” Mom touched my cheek. “And, I’ll do everything I can to fight this.”

“Okay.” Grabbing a napkin, I wiped my nose.

Mom patted my knee and stood up. “I’m turning in for the night.” I glanced at the clock. “It’s not even six, Mom.”

“I know,” she said. “But I’m exhausted.”

She looked at the vegetables on the cutting board and smiled apologetically at me. “I didn’t get too far with the dinner preparations. If you are hungry, there are leftovers in the fridge or lunchmeat.”

“I’ll be okay, Mom,” I said. “Thanks.” I stood and kissed her on the cheek. “I love you.”

“Love you too.”

Once she left for her room, I put the vegetables away. I took out a container of leftover chicken salad and a Diet Coke, going in the living room to flop down on my favorite recliner. Aiming the remote control at the TV, I mindlessly grazed through the channels. I couldn’t remember what was on that night. I barely noticed what I ate. I was seventeen years old, and my mom was all I had. What was I going to do?

NOT SURE IF YOU WANT TO READ NEVER FORGOTTEN?

A NOTE FROM KELLY RISSER:

10% of the first month’s profits for Never Forgotten will be donated to Susan G. Komen.

Never Forgotten is a fantasy novel, but it deals with a very real issue. Early in the story, Meara learns that her mother’s cancer has returned. While I’d rather tell you that I didn’t draw inspiration from personal experiences, the truth is, I did. Shortly before my husband and I got married, my mother-in-law (MIL) was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was hard to watch her fight for her life. Her hair fell out, and she became so thin. I remember hugging her and feeling every bone in her back. It was the first time I’d seen a human body in such a fragile state.

My MIL had an amazingly positive outlook. She lived to find joyous moments in the ordinary. She kept a journal, traveled, and visited with friends. The cancer went into remission. Unfortunately, it returned five years later, this time in her abdomen and surrounding organs. With a diagnosis of six months to two years, she passed away within two months, just shy of her 60th birthday. Her name was Sharon.

Yes, Meara’s mom is named after her. It’s one small way for me to keep her memory alive. The other way I want to do this requires your help. We all know the statistics about breast cancer, but I want to stress the important role you play in your health. The year prior to her first diagnosis, my MIL had a mammogram and a spot showed in the screening. Her doctor told her it was small, probably nothing. He would follow up in twelve months. She took his word and waited. When she went in for the second mammogram, it had grown tremendously. A biopsy proved it was cancer. Had she pushed for a biopsy right away, she might still be here today. With a year to grow, the cancer moved into too many of her lymph nodes.

My message to women is this—if you are a man, please share this message with the women close to you: do regular self-exams, starting now. You’re never too young or too old. If you’re 40 years old or have a family history of cancer, get regular mammograms. Don’t be afraid to push for your health. If something doesn’t sound right or you have questions, speak up! Yes, doctors are professionals, but they’re human, too. We all make mistakes. Last, support cancer research. It will only be through research that we will ever find answers to fight this disease that takes so many.

ABOUT KELLY RISSER:

Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and training at various companies.
She’s often found lamenting, “It’s hard to write when there’s so many good books to read!” So, when she’s not immersed in the middle of someone else’s fantasy world, she’s busy creating one of her own. This world is introduced in her first novel, Never Forgotten. Never Forgotten, a YA/NA Fantasy, will be released by Clean Teen Publishing in the Summer of 2014.
Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. They share their home with Clyde the Whoodle and a school of fish.

Goodreads  | Amazon

Welcome to HELL!

Melody Angel is a temp at the HELL Corporation. She seems to be the only angel in a place full of demons. Her mission is to find where Lucifer is hiding and find out what he is really up to. With Luce Iblis being her number one suspect, the smoldering hot CEO just adds plenty of trouble and temptation to her work.

Oh what a fun story, I really enjoyed this one. Melody is really an angel, she is sweet, calm and calculating and overall takes her situation in stride. The books main focus was mostly on Mel as she stumbles through HELL trying to figure out which one of her co-workers is Lucifer. So with a little bit of mystery added to keep the book exciting as well as some office humor and satire made this book very enjoyable.

The pace of the book varied, it started out fast and kind of slowed down a bit in the middle and picked up really in the end. I liked the ending and how everything fell together, but it left me wanting more. Especially with all the interesting and amusing characters of HELL Corporation and their reactions to Mel.

Thought there was some dirty jokes thrown into the book, it was relatively clean. I absolutely enjoyed watching Melody in that environment and her dislike of the office instant sludge coffee!

Summary from Goodreads

A former smuggler and
thief, Ariq—better known as the Kraken King—doesn’t know what to make of
the clever, mysterious woman he rescues from an airship besieged by
marauders. Unsure if she’s a spy or a pawn in someone else’s game, Ariq
isn’t about to let her out of his sight until he finds out…

After
escaping her fourth kidnapping attempt in a year, Zenobia Fox has
learned to vigilantly guard her identity. While her brother Archimedes
is notorious for his exploits, Zenobia has had no adventures to call her
own—besides the stories she writes.

But when she jumps at the
chance to escape to the wilds of Australia and acquire research for her
next story, Zenobia quickly discovers that the voyage will be far more
adventurous than any fiction she could put to paper…

There are three things I felt I needed
to get off my chest before I started this review.
One. I recently found out I am not at
all a fan of serials. I love the finished full book because when I
get into something, I strongly dislike having to stop in a middle of
a story because it’s not finished yet and wait a couple of weeks to
months for the rest to come out. This did not deter me away from The
Kraken King and finishing it. Just something I quickly learned along
the way.
Two. I have never read anything by
Meljean Brook before, so I have not read any of the earlier books of
this series. That’s okay, it does follow what looks like a different
set of characters and although Zenobia has been in other parts of
the series before, I could read this as a stand alone just fine.
Three. Ariq. Oh swooness alert, this
man has made this entire book a really hot worthwhile. I can take
waiting a few weeks to a few months to finish this series, as long as
I can have more of Ariq.
Zenobia Fox is a writer. So while her
brother Archimedes is known quiet well for his exploits, the only
real adventures Zenobia finds herself is in writing her stories.
After finding herself in yet another predicament, being attacked by
marauders on a ship in another attempt at kidnapping – she is saved
by no other than Ariq the Kraken King.
Ariq doesn’t know who Zenobia is, or
why her ship was a target in an attack. Thinking she might be a spy,
Ariq is set to find out everything he can about the mysterious woman.
What he didn’t expect was to be unexpectedly drawn to the woman,
making it his priority not only to crack through the woman’s goals
and show her identity but he would want nothing more but to lure
her into his bed. As a war brews on the inside for both Zenobia and
Ariq, there is even a bigger one on the outside that can cost
thousands of lives.
What a wonderful read. I thoroughly
have enjoyed Zenobia’s and Ariq’s adventure so far. Brook’s
writing is simply stunning. The world and the character’s that she
has created make it so easy to find yourself immersed and lost in her
novels. I found it hard to put this book down and originally did want
to review them maybe in two’s, but before I knew it I had finished
what was available and just knew I had to do it in one shot.
The attraction between Zenobia and Ariq
is clear from the very first meets, from the very first touch. I
enjoyed watching the sparks of both attraction and frustrations as
they continued to clash heads throughout the book. Ariq was
everything I wanted. He is a protective alpha male who would do
anything to keep his word. So when Zenobia get’s kidnapped once
again, he would literally cross the ocean to get her.
Seriously, this could really make a woman swoon.
Zenobia was just as interesting. I
loved her passion for writing, that it was almost a kind of
obsession. Her need to write made her character quiet original and
unique. After being kidnapped so many times, she had built a lot of
walls around herself. Walls that Ariq has a hard time knocking down
at first. But with a little manipulation, stole kisses, and heroic
heart stopping moments, maybe just maybe she would slowly start
bringing them down.

I cannot wait to read the rest of this series. There is a war brewing with a lot of lives in danger and Ariq and Zenobia find themselves in the thick of it. And it is possible that only Ariq has the power to put a stop to it. Action, adventure, romance and a very original world! Brook has created something truly amazing for the steampunk lovers.

Summary from Goodreads

Danger and passion explode in the third serial of Darkest Flame by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant. Bound
a connection deeper than desire, Kellan and Denae will stand together
as they fight for their lives. Cornered by an army of Dark Fae, they
both know that they must battle to the end to save each other…for each
other…in Darkest Flame: Part 3.”Time travel, ancient legends, and seductive romance are seamlessly interwoven into one captivating package.”—Publishers Weekly on the Dark Warrior series”Once again, Donna Grant has given the readers a great story.”

Did I mention I am not longer a fan of
serials?
/sigh.
No it is a shame. I absolutely enjoyed
this book, but the breaks in it really puts a damper on the storyline
and I find myself slightly confused because I don’t remember what
happened in earlier due to reading other stuff in between. Plus when
the next book comes around I feel like I will forget what happened up
to this point…
but anyway
/end rent
This is part three in Darkest Flame if
you couldn’t guess. I don’t know how to review this without spoilers
or giving away what was going on. It takes off right after the last
sentence in the last part. Kellan and Denae had been kidnapped by the
Dark Fae and the Dark Fae now have Kellan under this enchanting cuffs
that don’t allow him to use his powers. So while the other kings are
trying to find who is behind the kidnapping, Rhi is trying to find
Kellan and Denae. On top of it, Denae is being attacked by the Dark
Fae because she is somehow resisting their power and isn’t attracted
to them.
There is a part in this book that takes
kind of a dark turn about what happens to Denae which made me
uncomfortable but I won’t get into it.
Of course, Kellan and Denae still find
time to jump each other’s bones while being locked up in a dark and
cold dungeon while the baddies are on the loose. So that kind of threw
me off as well.
Tristan is a new addition to the kings
and I am very curious about him and what’s his story.
I am enjoying this book, despite some
moments in this part that made me kind of pause and er. But then
again, I do love my dragons and cannot get enough of them.

Winner of the
Malice Domestic Competition for Best First Traditional Mystery Novel, a
delightful Southern cozy from an award-winning author

Beth
McKenzie’s attempt to turn an old Southern mansion into a Bed and
Breakfast called The Dixie Dew is thwarted when her first guest is found
dead in bed. Murdered, it turns out. Three days later a young priest is
found strangled in his chapel. The whole town of Littleboro is abuzz,
and Ossie Delbardo, the town cop whose job heretofore mainly involved
controlling football traffic on Friday nights, is not cut out to solve
the murders.

With her barely opened B&B in danger of
failing, and aided by her friend from high school and trusty handyman,
Beth sets out to discover the truth of the murders. Littleboro has its
share of characters, some of which are helpful and others
misleading. There’s Crazy Reba who lives in a tree, bathes in any
bathtub she finds empty, and dumpster dives; Verna, the town know-it-all
and affectionate owner of Robert Redford, a huge white rabbit; and Miss
Tempie Merritt, music teacher and organist who always wears hat,
gloves, and lace-trimmed white socks. When Beth herself is
attacked, there’s no more time for baking muffins and stencilling
pineapples on the porch. She’s in a race to uncover her neighbors’
secrets before her hometown becomes her burial ground.

Doing it at the Dixie Dew is a charming and delightful debut boasting distinctly Southern personalities and a fine mystery.

Beth McKenzie makes her move back home after a bad incident with her
grandmother that leaves her an old Southern mansion. Sure the house is
falling apart, but Beth has always wanted to make it into a Bed and
Breakfast, even if the local residents of Littleboro
don’t see the need for it there. Unfortunately for Beth her opening
night is less than stellar when one of her guests turns up dead -
murdered. A few days later, a young priest is also found strangled in
his chapel with a pair of women’s undergarments. If the two murders are
connected, the town cop Ossie Delbardo has no qualms of pointing fingers at poor Beth.

With
the business in dangers of failing, Beth finds herself in a bit of a
pickle. With no help from the local authorities, she enlists the help of
her friend from high school and a handy man to put a nail on this case.

Cute story. A solid beginning to a new mystery series from a new to me author. I found the town of Littleboro
and Beth’s B & B quiet quaint. I absolutely love small town
mysteries, and one that takes place surrounding a Bed and Breakfast felt
oh so cozy and original. Since I haven’t yet read one in this kind of
setting I couldn’t wait to dig in.

Beth is a charming southern
girl who has one dream and that’s to hopefully make her Bed and
Breakfast work even if it seems quiet impossible. With the help of
Scott, she is slowly getting there - despite financial issues. So when a
woman ends up murdered and Beth is found to blame, she finds herself on
the look out for the real killer. Especially since she herself get’s
attacked in the process.

I was almost angry at Ossie
for acting the way he did, thought not uncommon in cozy mysteries. I
did not like the way he acted towards her. The lack of faith in the
local authority for Beth was almost disheartening. Especially when it
felt like he wanted to be paid off and only seemed to be in it for the
money. In the end, I he did end up growing on me just slightly. His
character was not very prominent in the book and ends up being mentioned
more in an offhand way, like sort of in the background.

Beth’s
and Scott’s relationship is cute. Thought I couldn’t feel the spark
between them until the end of the book, even then it was minimal. I
loved the way he came to her rescue, and was glad that Beth did have
someone looking out for her, someone she could trust.

I did
really enjoy this new series, and am looking to see more from Ruth Moose
in the future especially where she will take Beth and her new project!

Summary from Goodreads

From the award-winning
writer of the original Upstairs Downstairs—the second novel in an
irresistible trilogy about an Earl’s family and their servants at the
turn of the twentieth century

As 1901 comes to an end, there is
much to be grateful for: The Dilberne fortune has been restored, and the
grand Dilberne Court, with its one hundred rooms, has been saved. Lord
Robert’s son, Arthur, is happily married to a Chicago heiress, Minnie,
who is pregnant and trying to come to terms with her new role as lady of
the manor and her charming but controlling mother-in-law, Lady Isobel.

As
Lord Robert and Lady Isobel get caught up in the preparations for the
coronation of Edward VII, they debate the future of their recently
orphaned niece, Adela. Isobel and Minnie want to take her in; Robert and
Arthur do not. While they argue, Adela runs away and joins a traveling
group of spiritualists and has a life-saving run-in with the king.

With
Long Live the King, Fay Weldon continues the magnificent trilogy that
began with Habits of the House. As the award-winning writer for the
pilot episode of the original Upstairs Downstairs, Weldon brings her
deservedly famous wit and insight to this novel of love and desire,
morals and manners.

Take a journey to the start of the
twentieth century and into the year 1901. The series continues to
fall the Dilberne family. Now that their fortune was restored, Lord
Robert and Lady Isobel are trying to prepare for the coronation of
King Edward VII.
Midst dealing with their own family issues, the
Dilberne end up with their orphaned niece Adela – who is also said
to be some kind of a princess. Adela lived with her parents, until
one unexpected night her house burned down. Thanks to her maid’s
beau, Adela was saved. Her parents were the unfortunate ones that did
not survive the raging fire.
So Adela ends up in the Dilberne household where
Lady Isobel and her new pregnant daughter in law Minnie would like to
take Adela in. Meanwhile, her husband and Robert and son Arthur want
nothing to do with the girl and would much rather her mother side of
the family fended for her.
Interesting story. Thought I have not read the first
installment which is also about the Dilberne family – this one
could be read as a stand alone. Unfortunately you do end up missing a
chunk of information, especially what had happened to Dilberne
fortune and how they came out on top. Also, from what I heard the
first book is actually the better of the series.
Thought besides feeling a bit lost at times, Long
Live the King did introduce several new characters that from what I
also understand were not in book 1 – so their lives where easier to
follow. Unfortunately, they did not really keep my interest. Outside
of the interesting stories of what was going on in Dilberne
household, the book was filled with too much fillers.
Even thought I felt sorry for Adela and the way she
had been treated most of her life not only by her parents but now by
her estrange uncle – I had a hard time connecting to the girl. The
character to me did not feel very well rounded.
The pace of the story was a bit on the slowish side,
but for those who really enjoyed Downton Abby and a relaxed paced
historical will probably enjoy the amount of detail put into this
work and the relaxed pace.
What I did like was some of the chapter that did
feature the help. Thought this is suppose to be a downstairs,
upstairs kind of book. I felt that it did lack in the downstairs
department and felt it would have been much more interesting if there
was more emphasis on it.
Overall, it was a good read with some really
enjoyable chapters, but seemed to have fallen flat in the rest. I gave this book 3 stars instead of 2 1/2 because Weldon’s writing over all was actually pretty constructive and great. Her choice of words was remarkable.

As Enchanted Village’s resident Wishcrafter, Darcy Merriweather has the power to make other people’s wishes come true, but what she really wishes is that she had the power to uncloak the invisible man who’s stalking her best friend....   Darcy’s closest friend and fellow witch, Starla Sullivan, hoped she’d never see her ex-husband, Kyle, again. Two years ago he tried to kill her, and he has been a fugitive ever since. Now Starla claims to have seen him back in Enchanted Village, but it seems she’s the only one who can see him. To everyone else, her ex is invisible.   Darcy only wishes his motives were as transparent as the rest of him. Since the police can’t arrest someone they can’t see, it’s up to Darcy to find the secret behind Kyle’s latest disappearing act—before he does something they can’t see coming….

ADDICTIVE magical must-read MURDERMYSTERY

Enchanting and magical!Darcy Merriweather is a resident Wishcrafter in an Enchanted Village. What does that mean? She has the power to grant people their wishes, as long as it’s approved by the elders. But now, the only thing Darcy wishes is that she had the power to help her best friend a fellow witch uncover her invisible husband.Starla never really thought she would see her ex-husband again. Not since the night he tried to kill her. Which in turn had left a lot of unanswered
questions. How could the man she fell so in love with, change before her very eyes?

When her ex’s family turns a cold shoulder on Starla and accuses her of making the thing up, things only turn for the worse when Kyle (the ex) turns up dead in Starla’s home. With mounting evidence turning up against, it’s up to Darcy to put this one to rest.

This was very original. I love the uniqueness of this series and how it’s done. I especially loved the little magical town, full of very interesting characters. From familiars that talk to people with special powers living among people who do not have any. Darcy was charming, a loyal friend, trusting and compassionate. I totally fell in love with her character and wished I had her powers - heh wished.

The way the mystery turned out I thought was unique as well. Blake has crafted a really alluring series. I had the most difficult time putting this one down. I really wanted to know the big secret behind what happened to Kyle and why he treated Starla the way he did. What I got in return was news so heartbreaking, I could almost feel Starla’s shattering pain and the unfairness of it. Especially since he is now gone.

By the end of the book I found myself in tears. Not only for Kyle, but for Darcy’s best friend as well. I was so glad that the real ending was pulled together so well, and surprising kind of beautiful. With a touch of romance and some magic, this was a very heartwarming and really enjoyable read. In the end, I found myself wishing I could live in the enchanted village.
